EFFICIENT TRANSFER OF INFORMATION

Communication modules

The key word: versatility. Learn about the SATEL communication modules, which will open up new possibilities for your intruder alarm or building automation systems.
Effective communication is one of the cornerstones of intruder alarm systems, but not only. It is also essential for monitoring automation systems or production processes. In these cases, long-distance data transmission is necessary for event reporting, messaging, remote control, and more.

Various communication channels

Depending on the available infrastructure and needs, communication can take place through a variety of channels. The modules can both receive and send information over cellular networks (2G, 3G and 4G), Ethernet networks, and the PSTN (analog telephone network).
an example illustrating various communication channels used by communication modules operating with INTEGRA/INTEGRA Plus control panels

SATEL communication modules provide any system with new functions, enabling you to connect it with the rest of the world.

The communication module can operate:
In an intruder alarm system
When connected to an alarm control panel, the modules transmit information about events recorded by the alarm system to specified persons or institutions. This solution is ideal for alarm control panels that do not have built-in communication modules, and cannot transmit information remotely. In this way, you can use the communication module to grant older systems a “new life”.
An intruder alarm system already featuring a communication module can be fitted with another device that supports a different transmission format.
Autonomously
The SATEL communication modules can control automation system elements connected to the module outputs, either automatically or on user command. The modules can also be programmed to perform a specific pre-selected action responding to data received from connected sensors. The autonomous modules are a perfect choice when it comes to, for example, the monitoring of environmental conditions.

What can communication modules be used for?

Event reporting
The communication modules can receive a message about a burglary alarm or another event recorded by the alarm control panel (e.g., a failure of some of the system components or detection of the first symptoms of fire). Such information is immediately transmitted to a security agency or another institution equipped with a monitoring station. As a result, they can quickly react to the situation and consequently minimise possible damage.
Event reporting can utilize:

data transmission over TCP/UDP
(via Ethernet or cellular data network (GPRS / LTE))

voice channel
(over a cellular network or PSTN)

text messages (SMS)

DUAL PATH REPORTING
In order to make sure that information is successfully transmitted to the monitoring station, the so-called Dual Path Reporting is employed. In this case, the communication module uses two communication paths (with the possibility of setting a priority), constantly checking each of them for the status of connections with the monitoring station. If a communication problem in one of the paths occurs, transmission is switched to the other one.
Messaging
Communication modules can send messages directly to individual persons: a caretaker, building manager or company owner as well as to installers and service engineers. The configuration of the communication module makes it possible to select the type of events about which users are to be notified.
Notifications can be sent in a variety of ways using:

voice messages (over a cellular network or PSTN)

text messages (SMS)

PUSH messages

e-mail messages

CLIP service*

* (the module calls the pre-programmed phone numbers and hangs up automatically after a few seconds).
In some cases it is possible to transmit notifications to the recipient in several ways at the same time. In this way, information should be delivered even if communication in one of the channels is disrupted or otherwise impossible.
Remote control
In this respect, SATEL communication modules offer system users a number of possibilities. Remote control is an extremely convenient solution for both intruder alarm systems and building automation functions.
Remote control can be implemented in a variety of ways using:

mobile application

text messages (SMS)

CLIP service*

DTMF signals
(via a phone keypad)

configuration software

IoT (Internet of Things)

* (you need to call the module number and hang up after hearing the dial tone)
GSM gateway
Selected SATEL communication modules offer the possibility of simulating an analog telephone line using a cellular connection. They can also operate as a backup communication path for an analog line. They can filter calls made via the built-in mobile phone as well as generate ring tones and caller ID information.

Where will the communication modules come in handy?

Facilities protected with an intruder alarm system

Not all alarm control panels have a built-in communication module. This means they are unable to communicate with other devices, let alone be controlled via a mobile app. Connecting a suitably configured communication module opens up a number of new functions for the intruder alarm system without the need to replace it with a newer model.

Specialised warehouses

The storage of certain groups of goods (such as foodstuffs or medicines) requires the maintenance of strictly defined environmental conditions. An autonomously operating communication module can monitor the upkeep of selected parameters (e.g., temperature), and provide information if preset threshold values are exceeded.

Vessels

Communication modules can be used to monitor conditions in containers during sea transport. Values transmitted to the module can be sent further ashore over the vessel’s own satellite network.

Solar and wind farms

Communication modules can monitor weather conditions, temperature or even dirt levels of solar panels, and battery status.

Server rooms, underground tanks or mines

In places where it is crucial to maintain specific environmental conditions (such as temperature or air quality), communication modules collect information from connected sensors and transmit it.

Convenience and speed of operation

Remote access

Control from your mobile app
Regardless of whether it is a communication module operating autonomously or as part of an intruder alarm system, you have the possibility, using the dedicated GX CONTROL mobile application, to view its status and conveniently control selected functions remotely.

Configure from anywhere

A quick response to a sudden need to adjust the functionality of a module or its associated system is possible thanks to the remote configuration option. All you need is access to the Internet. Once a connection with the module is established, the person authorised to modify the settings can start working immediately, even if they are not on site. This way, you can access devices in different parts of the world from a single location.
Upgrade firmware remotely
The need to constantly adapt devices to changing consumer expectations and available technologies results in the development of new firmware versions. Uploading the newest firmware enables the use of the latest functionalities, and is virtually possible at any time. In the case of SATEL modules, the upgrade can be performed remotely using the UPSERV software, without the need to go to the facility and disassemble the electronics. This enables the user to access the latest module features offered by the manufacturer in just a few moments.
Internet of Things (IoT)
SATEL modules can communicate with other devices within the Internet of Things (IoT). This allows the modules to be integrated with, for example, automation systems and measurement data acquisition systems. The modules can transmit readings from e.g., temperature sensors and information about the status of connected devices, and in response receive control commands (for example, regarding the cooling system).
